DIY小玩意

DIY1

  1. I am a lazy guy. I would use a bucket to catch the dirty water. When it is half full and after I pee in the toilet I’ll carry the bucket to empty the water into the toilet bowl, while I think about whether I should call it half empty instead of half full. I’ll probably say, what the… if it was my cup of coffee, either half full or half empty would be fine with me. But it’s no coffee… Then I’ll think about the very important question: To flush or not to flush? And I’ll say, If I hadn’t just peed, the question would have been Shakespeare’s “to pee or not to pee?" That’s even more important. But then another question comes up: How come the toilet bowl is always half full? I’ve just poured that damn bucket of dirty water in there! That makes me remember and think about the wine glass I found in some lab years ago that could do the same trick after I fixed it. (Even though it wasn’t functioning, I just took a look and knew what it was suppose to do.) Maybe that’s the reason why dogs drink out of the toilet. It smells like wine to them? Yuck! Now, I need some wine. Where is my bottle? I’m not drunk, I’m telling you. And I don’t need any coffee, not even a half cup of it, to wake me up.

The cost of my DIY: a bucket and a bottle of wine. Yeah!

  2. ha ha…

That wine glass and my fixing it was a true story though. But it was in a room holding a lot of apparatus for experiments used for class demonstrations. Experiments (testing of equipemt) would be set up and done in there too. (I think it was used as a lab later. But I was gone then.) Some antique apparatus was stored there too. The wine glass was probably like a part of some collection or a “toy."
It was said that in some places in some ancient time similar wine cups (probably made of metal, not glass) were used to get people drunk (or not) while one wouldn’t get drunk (first). But I wounder how they handled the wine that was drained out. Carrying a hidden bag under their clothes to catch it with tubes?
And it was said that the idea or design of modern toliet bowl was based on this kind of ancient wine cups. Whether it really was the case I don’t know. I didn’t made up the connection between the two though.

    Correction: supposed

    • Thanks. But I’m not so sure about that.
But before I go on, let me say this first. If you have connections and can get a publisher in HK to publish or potentially publish it, I don’t mind writing one. It’s probably a sci-fi. (Not a surprise there.) But it can be something else. If that happens, I may need some help from someone like you. Maybe you and I co-write it, or I write it and you edit it.
I got some sci-fi idea before and tested it with some people, they liked it. I thought about some plots for it too. But I never thought about really writing it. Even though I was thinking about that if I wrote it it would be in English (I would need an English editor then), I don’t mind if it’s in Chinese.

Back to what I’m not so sure about.
I can come up with some good, or not so good, ideas and some good plots (especially for sci fi, again, no surprise there), but I am not sure about how to do a good job in writing about characters. Publishers here like characters. Maybe you can give me some pointers about it. Hmm, I have read books by some famous writers here about how to write fictions (characters, dialogues, and whatever), but I’ve never really learned and I don’t really know how to do it well.
Also, although I can write some similes, metaphors, flashbacks, etc., I am not very good at doing them. I’m hopeless. Okay, let’s be more positive, I can try my best. Oh, actually I’m really good at flashbacks in the storylines I use when I am daydreaming. LOL.
One time I was expanding a short story from my kid’s story book after translating it into Chinese for my kid, I made part of it more descriptive and added some similes and/or metaphors; my wife commented that it was so “literary." (Her opinion could be biased.) I thought I did a bit better than I had imagined. (That’s a surprise.) But it’s probably not good enough.

Maybe I don’t have to use these things that much. Not all fictions are so character and “literature" oriented. Some are plot oriented (more like my style). I’ve read at least one American suspense fiction like that and it has been made into a movie. Why not? Probably many sci-fi are more plot oriented than character oriented. (Do you think so?) Some sci-fi (books) have been made into movies too.

Writing fiction isn’t really my thing. “A man has to know his limitations." (From a Clint Eastwood movie.) But another saying is, “sky is the limit."

What do you think? It makes you have second thought, right? Ha ha. No problem. I don’t expect or hope for anything. But I can dream about it. And I won’t cover up my shortcomings, because I don’t need to do that. (Not because I’m a good person. No surprise here either. Ha ha ha.)

  3. zpdrmn chang:

    • I won’t do blogs. I’m too lazy for that. Not in the near future anyway.
If I really want to write (in English), I’d use self publication sites, like Amazon. But then I would first write something other than a fiction, which isn’t my strong area as I said before. (Some writers would write a series and offer the first book for free to hook readers and charge for the subsequent ones.) For me, writing a fiction may be years from now or will never happen. Some people suggested that I should write one but I always said it’s too hard to do. “A man has to know his limitations." But “the sky has no limit." Ha ha.
